Breast Explant Surgery

Are you considering Breast Explant plastic surgery? Learn more about what to expect before and after surgery to find out if this cosmetic procedure is right for you. Women commonly undergo Breast Explant surgery to correct implant ruptures, reduce excessively large breasts brought on by implants, or to remove scar tissue that has solidified around the implant and resulted in capsular contracture.

C Cup to an A Cup

Breast Explant surgery is a procedure that removes previously placed implants and any surrounding scar tissue without the replacement of another implant. A Breast Explant procedure can help relieve physical symptoms such as pain, discomfort, and swelling that are caused by large implants.

Breast Implant Removal Surgery can also be performed with other cosmetic procedures such as Liposuction, Breast Augmentation, Breast Reduction, or a Breast Lift.

What Should You Expect From Breast Explant Surgery?

Breast Explant surgery is an outpatient procedure. On the day of surgery, your plastic surgeon will administer sedation and general anesthesia so you don’t feel any pain. It typically takes about 30-90 minutes depending on the complexity and your specific goals. During the surgery, an incision is made either at the areola, the inframammary fold (under the breast), or over your original incision site. The incision is closed with a suture. Depending on the patient’s goals, the capsule can be removed after the implant is extracted or a lift can be performed. After the operation is complete, your surgeon may apply bandages or stitches to the affected area.

Who Makes a Good Candidate?

Common reasons women receive Breast Explant surgery are implant rupture, overly large breasts due to implants, or scar tissue that has hardened around the implant, causing a capsular contracture. If you’re going through any of these circumstances, you may make a good candidate.

Commonly Asked Questions About
Breast Explant Surgery

  • Though Breast Explant surgery can provide numerous benefits, it is important to be aware of the potential side effects. These can include infection, bleeding, scarring, and nerve damage.

  • Immediately after the surgery, you will notice a difference. As your body continues to heal, you will start to see swelling and bruising resolve over the next 1-2 weeks.

  • In some cases, you may experience a change in incision over your incision site. Typically these will resolve over time.

  • Immediately after the procedure, you may experience some soreness or discomfort. However, your doctor can prescribe pain medications to help manage any pain.

  • Over time, if properly taken care of, your skin should become more elastic as it begins to heal. However, unless you have combined your explant with a lift, any excess skin that is present or evident when the implant is removed will remain.

  • To ensure proper healing, it is important to follow all your doctor’s instructions during recovery. This includes avoiding strenuous activities, abstaining from smoking, and keeping the surgical site clean.
